How does the Defeat Diabetes Program work, and how can a low carb approach send pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes into remission? Read the Defeat Diabetes FAQs to learn more.
Type 2 diabetes is the single biggest health issue in Australia. 100,000 Australians are diagnosed with diabetes each year: one every five minutes. People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes, three times more likely to suffer kidney failure, amputations are 15 times more common and it is the leading cause of preventable blindness in Australia.
The Defeat Diabetes Program is a simple, effective and evidence-based program created by world-class Australian doctors and dietitians. It provides a roadmap to recovery for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes and many other metabolic illnesses.
Defeat Diabetes members have reported significant health and lifestyle improvements including lower glucose levels, weight loss, increased energy, better sleep and reduced need for medication.
The Defeat Diabetes Program, founded by Dr. Peter Brukner OAM, focuses on a low carb lifestyle, exercise and sleep as the key to preventing and reversing type 2 diabetes and a range of health conditions.
The program is grounded in the latest nutritional and metabolic science. Research shows when you remove carbohydrates, which are high in glucose, you reduce your blood glucose. This lowering of blood glucose brings pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes under control and into remission.
Delivered via the Defeat Diabetes mobile app, the program provides a practical and easy way to reduce your blood glucose levels. You’ll have access to 13 structured lessons featuring videos, masterclasses that provide a deeper dive into key topics, cooking demonstrations, affordable, simple and delicious recipes, resource sheets and a private Defeat Diabetes Facebook community to share support, advice and inspiration.
If you’ve got type 2 diabetes, you can expect improved blood sugar levels almost immediately. This may mean that you need to reduce the dose of your diabetes medication, which is discussed in Lesson 5 of the Defeat Diabetes Program.
There are a number of other health improvements you might notice, including: weight loss, lower blood pressure, reduced reflux or heartburn, improved sleep, increased energy and reduced joint pain.
There is now a significant body of research that shows a low carb, healthy fat and protein diet can have a significant impact on those with type 2 diabetes.
The Defeat Diabetes way of eating can result in better glycaemic control, reduced medication use, weight loss and, in many cases, remission of type 2 diabetes (a recent study shows more than 50% of people on low carbohydrate diets reversed their type 2 diabetes).
Online programs similar to Defeat Diabetes have been established for several years in both the UK and the USA. The UK program has seen more than 400,000 people undertake a low carb program, with a study finding over a quarter of participants reduced their HbA1c to below the diabetes threshold, and 40% reduced their diabetes medications. In the USA, a similar remote care model has also proven to be successful, with 50% of participants putting their diabetes into remission.
Short answer: Yes! A low carb, real food diet has been proven to have a profound effect on not only type 2 diabetes, but a range of other chronic diseases. If weight loss is your goal, a low carb healthy fat eating approach - such as the Defeat Diabetes way of eating - has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to lose weight for good. It has also been shown to reverse fatty liver disease, caused by sugary diets. Eating fewer carbs can also help manage and in some cases prevent some chronic conditions such as childhood epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, dementia, PCOS and multiple sclerosis.
The Defeat Diabetes Program is specifically designed for busy singles, couples and families. The program is self-paced, and our recipes are quick and simple (and delicious!) to prepare, with minimal cooking or chopping. The majority of recipes can be whipped up in under 30 minutes (many can be pulled together on-the-go in under 10 minutes!) and the videos run for 5 minutes on average, so perfectly achievable to fit into your busy schedule. Preparation, shopping ahead and having lots of healthy options in your pantry is key. We recommend a minimum three-month commitment and ideally 12 months on the program to reap the full benefits.
In a word: Yes! We encourage you to get family involved. The Defeat Diabetes way of eating is safe and beneficial for all age groups, from children to the elderly. And we’ve created plenty of recipes sure to keep young tums happy! In Lesson 12 on the Defeat Diabetes Program, we go further into detail about bringing your family on the journey and the earlier, the better.
No. It doesn’t need to be expensive to eat healthy and nutritious food. With sufficient planning, freezing foods, purchasing seasonal foods, ‘imperfect picks’ and economic cuts of meat, you can easily maintain your budget whilst on the program. In Lesson 7 of the Defeat Diabetes Program we provide practical tips that will ensure you don’t blow your budget.
Yes. We understand that eating out and maintaining your preferred way of eating can feel challenging, however there are many good, low carb take-away and eating out choices you can make. In Lesson 8 of the Defeat Diabetes Program we guide you through a range of popular cuisines and healthy options, and give you tips on how to navigate restaurant eating stress free.
Many alcoholic drinks can be enjoyed in moderation, but some drinks should be avoided due to their very high sugar content. In Lesson 8 of the Defeat Diabetes Program we go into further detail with tips and tricks for eating and drinking out.
Yes. We recommend staying away from high fructose fruit (also known as ‘nature’s candy’). Further information about specific fruits to go for - and which to avoid - is included in the Defeat Diabetes Program.
Yes. Just pay attention to what you add to your cup. Opt for full fat milk and avoid added sugar, syrups and chocolate powders.
Yes. Increasingly, elite sportspeople are reducing their carb intake and replacing it with healthy fats, and this is particularly true for endurance athletes. This is because the Defeat Diabetes way of eating burns fat for fuel, rather than sugar. A low carb lifestyle is especially helpful for the recovery and treatment of inflammation.
You can definitely live a nutritionally balanced low carb vegetarian lifestyle and still put your type 2 diabetes into remission. There are many nutritional benefits to eating animal-based foods, but more importantly, fats are essential macronutrients and important to include with all meals. We cover this in more detail in Lesson 6 and have developed a vegetarian version of the Defeat Diabetes food list to make things easy for you.
For vegans, the limited options for fat as fuel makes a low carb approach difficult to sustain. We don’t recommend the program for vegans.
Yes. Simply substitute or avoid any ingredients you're sensitive to. You're always welcome to add alternative options to suit.
Yes. The Defeat Diabetes way of eating is low in carbs and avoids seed oils so is likely to improve your LDL profile. While a diet high in saturated fat might increase your overall LDL cholesterol, it is carbohydrates and seed oils which turn it bad.
That is, not all LDL is bad. Only a portion of LDL called the small dense variety seems to increase your risk of heart disease. Other LDL actually appears beneficial. And this is supported by multiple research papers which seem to indicate that people with higher LDL levels tend to live longer.
In Lesson 10 of the Defeat Diabetes Program we explore cholesterol in detail.
A low carb or ketogenic diet as recommended by Defeat Diabetes has been shown to reverse fatty liver. Recent evidence has made it clear that sugar, especially fructose, is associated with increased fatty deposits.
The Defeat Diabetes way of eating promotes low carb consumption, effectively reducing inflammation and modulating the immune response. As a result, it could be an effective tool for reversing symptoms of autoimmunity.
It’s recommended to reduce your carb intake while pregnant to avoid suffering from gestational diabetes, which occurs in 12-14% of pregnant women, so the Defeat Diabetes Program is a good option if you want support while reducing your carbs.
Evidence suggests that a low carb diet can help manage type 1 diabetes, however we recommend to work closely with your doctor or diabetes educator as you'll need to adjust your insulin as your blood sugar stabilises.

If you have type 2 diabetes and are taking any of the following it is critical that you consult with your doctor before beginning the Defeat Diabetes Program as your dosage will need to be reduced: Insulin injections; SGLT2 inhibitor tablets including dapagliflozin (Forxiga), empagliflozin (Jardiance) and ertugliflozin (Steglatro); Sulphonylureas tablets including gliclazide (Glyade, Mellihexal, Nidem, Genrx Gliclazide), gliclazide ER (Diamicron MR, Glyade MR, Oziclide MR), glibenclamide (Daonil, Glimel), glipizide (Melizide, Minidiab) and glimepiride (Amaryl, Dimirel, Aylide, Diapride, Gilmepiride Sandoz); and Glitazones tablets including rosiglitazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos). We have written a letter for your doctor explaining the program which you should take with you to your consult.
It is an online risk assessment tool designed for people without a current diagnosis of diabetes and is intended to highlight a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years. It is not a diagnostic tool and the results are not medical advice.
If you are at risk or concerned about diabetes, we advise visiting a healthcare professional for further information. The test is based on the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) developed and designed by Adj. Prof Jaana Lindstrom and Prof. Jaakko Tuomilehto from the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland.
