Low carb and high spirits: how to handle booze like a pro

2 mins read

Celebrations often come with a toast or two, and if you’re following a low carb lifestyle, you might have noticed that alcohol feels a little… different. At Defeat Diabetes, we’re all for enjoying life in moderation. So, whether it’s Christmas, New year’s eve. birthdays, a wedding, or just a weekend catch-up, follow our top tips to sip smarter and wake up the next morning feeling a little less bleurgh and a little more…human!

1. Alcohol and your low carb metabolism

When you drink alcohol, your liver drops everything to focus on processing the ethanol—it sees it as a toxin that needs to be dealt with ASAP. This means your body temporarily puts fat-burning on hold to clear the booze.

For low carb drinkers, this pause can feel more noticeable since your body is used to burning fat for fuel. Don’t worry, though—an occasional drink isn’t going to derail your progress. Just keep in mind that it might slow things down a little, especially if weight loss or metabolic health is your main goal.

2. Why low carb drinkers feel alcohol faster

If you’ve ever wondered why one drink hits like two when you’re low carb, here’s the scoop: without the glycogen (stored carbs) and water that comes with a standard diet, alcohol moves through your system much faster.

That “carb cushion” usually slows alcohol absorption, but when you’re low carb, it’s missing in action. The result? You may feel tipsy faster—and reach your limit sooner. It’s totally normal but worth keeping in mind so you don’t accidentally overdo it.

3. Why hangovers can be worse on low carb

Nobody likes a hangover, but on a low carb diet, they can feel extra rough. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and stomach irritation are common culprits, and low carb eating means you’re naturally lower in electrolytes due to reduced glycogen stores—when glycogen is stored, it retains water and electrolytes, so depleting it means your body holds onto less of both.

The good news? A little planning and the right remedies can make all the difference.

Low carb foods and drinks to help you bounce back

Feeling a little worse for wear? Try these low-carb-friendly fixes:

  • Electrolyte-rich drinks: Rehydrate with options like bone broth or plain water with a pinch of salt. For a flavour-packed beverage, we love a sachet of Sodii in a glass of cold water.
  • Eggs: Scrambled, fried, or in an omelette, eggs are packed with cysteine, which helps your liver break down alcohol byproducts. Some of our favourite ways with eggs are Scrambled Eggs with Salmon and Avocado and Super Simple Steak and Eggs!
  • Avocado: Loaded with potassium, avocado is perfect for replenishing lost electrolytes. Combine the power of eggs with potassium-rich avocado for the ultimate hangover cure with our Avocado BLT.
  • Ginger tea: A calming go-to for easing nausea and settling your stomach.
