Dr Peter Brukner, the founder of Defeat Diabetes, has released a book The Diabetes Plan, that offers hope to every Australian diagnosed with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes.
We caught up with Dr Peter Brukner to pick his brains on the motivation behind The Diabetes Plan and why it’s so important for those living with or at risk of type 2 diabetes to hear this message of hope.
What motivated you to write The Diabetes Plan?
“If you don’t know my story, I’m a sports medicine physician who has worked with many leading sports teams in Australia and the UK. Despite health playing a big role in my life, in my 60s, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes.
“Having followed the advice of the dietary guidelines for all of my adult life, I was stunned that I had still developed pre-diabetes. But, after deep diving into the research, I quickly discovered that the high carb, low fat I’d been following was based on flawed science.
“I soon switched to a low carb, high fat diet after reading promising research from the UK and US. As a result, I lost 13 kilograms, sent my pre-diabetes into remission and dramatically improved my metabolic health.
“To help others affected by type 2 diabetes, I created an online program The Defeat Diabetes Program, in January 2021, which has seen thousands of Australians lose weight and achieve type 2 diabetes remission.
“After seeing the success of the Defeat Diabetes Program over the past two years, I was motivated to write The Diabetes Plan to help reach even more people affected by pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes and offer them a message of hope.
“Ultimately, type 2 diabetes is NOT a chronic progressive disease, and I want people to know that with the right approach, you can Defeat Diabetes.”
What do you hope to achieve with The Diabetes Plan?
“With a mission to put 100,000 Australians with type 2 diabetes into remission, I hope The Diabetes Plan and the Defeat Diabetes Program continue to inspire those affected by type 2 diabetes to discover a path to better health.
“Living with diabetes can be difficult and overwhelming. My hope for The Diabetes Plan is to provide an evidence-based approach to help make managing diabetes easier and more manageable.
“In The Diabetes Plan, I outline the key elements to sending type 2 diabetes into remission, sharing my diet approach, meal plans, testimonials and more than 45 recipes.
“I believe that what we have been told to eat over the last 40 years has resulted in epidemics of obesity and chronic diseases, and I’m determined to prove there’s a way to reverse this.”
How is The Diabetes Plan different to The Defeat Diabetes Program?
“The Diabetes Plan is the perfect companion to the Defeat Diabetes Program. It provides a glimpse into our doctor-led, evidence-based approach, which has helped thousands to lose weight, reduce their medications and prevent or send their type 2 diabetes into remission.
“While The Diabetes Plan and The Defeat Diabetes Program share the same approach to sending type 2 diabetes into remission, we know many people prefer to read in print, and The Diabetes Plan offers choice and flexibility in accessing this information.
After reading The Diabetes Plan, we know you’ll want to dive right into making healthy life-long changes. The Defeat Diabetes Program is a natural progression, offering a step-by-step approach to sending type 2 diabetes into remission with ongoing education and support, including:
