Naked Cheeseburger

  • 250 g minced beef
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tbsp butter
  • 2 slices cheese
  • 2 pickled gherkin, sliced
  • 2 iceberg lettuce leaves
  • ¼ red onion, sliced
  • ½ tbsp tomato sauce, low sugar
  • ½ tbsp American mustard, low sugar


  • Combine the beef mince with the egg and salt using your hands or a wooden spoon until well blended. Divide the mixture in half and shape to form two burger patties.
  • Heat the butter in a large non-stick fry pan over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook  for approximately 3 minutes per side. (They can also be grilled on a BBQ.) Add a slice of cheese to each burger towards the end of cooking, giving it enough time to melt over the pattie.
  • Serve with the gherkin, lettuce and red onion as a side or use a large lettuce cup as a burger “bun” to hold the pattie, gherkin and red onion. Serve with tomato sauce and mustard.
