Weight loss and improved control blood glucose control go hand in hand. There are many advantages to losing weight, but what is the best way to go about it?

There are three proven ways to lose weight and improve blood sugar levels if we look at the science.

The first is bariatric surgery which involves cutting out or bypassing a section of your gastrointestinal tract. It is major surgery with all the associated risks and significant side effects. Therefore, it should only be considered as a last resort.

The other two methods are dietary. The first is the low carb approach which is the basis of the Defeat Diabetes Program. Reducing your carbs by eliminating sugars and starches is an effective way to lose weight steadily. The great advantage of the low carb approach is that it is sustainable in the long term.

This contrasts with the other method of losing weight and improving blood sugars: the low calorie approach. Reducing your calorie intake from the recommended 2000 calories a day (many people have far more than 2000) to around 1000 calories is an effective way to lose weight. This is due to the reduction in calories and because reducing overall calories reduces the carb intake. As a result, most low calorie diets are both low calorie and low carb.
