"How I reversed 20 years of type 2 diabetes in just four months." ~ Bill's story

Bill has led a rich and fascinating life. After leaving school at 16, he worked on his father’s Merino sheep farm in rural Australia for six years. But, at 22, he felt ‘the calling’ and left the sanctuary of the farm to join a different kind of sanctuary: the priesthood, studying philosophy and theology. One year before ordination, he made the difficult decision to leave and pursue an entirely different career. After completing his psychology degree, Bill began a career as a Clinical Psychologist. Over the years, he indulged his passion for coastal cruising, sailing five months from Sydney to Cape York to Darwin and down to Perth.

But there was one constant for much of his chequered life: type 2 diabetes. Here’s how Bill, aged 84, overturned two decades of chronic disease within months of joining the Defeat Diabetes Program. 

“Although mum and dad were in good health, working the farm, they were heavy smokers and sadly passed away from cancer. But there was never any history of type 2 diabetes in the family. 

“So when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after a stint in hospital in my 60s, it was a bit of a shock. Eventually, my GP prescribed metformin, and I just carried on with that for 20 years. I never questioned it. It was just another pill to take. 

“Then, in 2022, my HbA1c blood sugar results crept up to 7.8, and in 2023, they rose again to 8. I started to question my health and looked into metformin and its side effects. I went to my GP and told him I wanted to do something about my rising blood sugars and try to come off the meds. My GP was supportive and told me it was possible but didn’t really offer any advice beyond that. 

“So, I began to experiment. I would eat Uncle Toby’s Traditional Oats, believing they were a healthy breakfast, and couldn’t work out why my blood sugars spiked at lunchtime. When I realised it was the oats, I ditched them and almost immediately felt better. At this stage, I didn’t know about Defeat Diabetes or really understand low carb, but I began watching videos on YouTube and learning about the havoc carbohydrates can wreak on blood sugar.

“I read Michael Mosely’s The Fast 800, which recommends a low calorie Mediterranean diet. I tried to follow that way of eating, but the calorie restriction was too hard and impossible to stick to. Then, some friends recommended the Defeat Diabetes Low Carb Program. I had a little knowledge of low carb diets and how they might help manage type 2 diabetes from my YouTube research, so I decided to give it a try. 

“What I like about the Defeat Diabetes Program is that it gives me structure and focus in terms of what to do. I ditched all carbohydrates and adopted a simpler way of eating. Breakfast is two fried eggs and bacon, lunch tends to be chicken or a cold cut with a salad, and dinner is steak or lamb chops with vegetables. It may sound mundane to some people, but I like the routine and simplicity of it. I don’t have to think about what I’m eating. Plus, it helps that I’ve always really, really loved salads - even as a kid! 

“My diet is now far simpler and has stripped my weight off. When I started the Defeat Diabetes Low Carb Program four months ago, I weighed 81.5 kg. Now I am around 65 kg - almost 17 kg of weight loss in four months, and I never once felt hungry or found it difficult. Although my BMI shows I’m within normal range for my height, I really want to stabilise my weight and perhaps even put on a few kilos. I’ll add more fat and protein to my diet and maybe some low carb bread with butter to my brekkie. The program has taught me that everyone’s metabolism is different, and I need to find my carb threshold to feel comfortable with my weight.

“My Hba1c is also hugely improved. I have gone from 8 to 6.2. Having struggled with type 2 diabetes for 20 years, to achieve remission is a huge accomplishment for me. Now, I want to work with my GP to reduce my medications and hope to be able to come off them altogether. 

“My friends who originally recommended Defeat Diabetes are delighted with my progress, and so is my family.
