"For the first time in 15 years, I was able to put on my engagement ring, and that means more than anything." ~ Lynn's story
Weight loss: Has lost 13 kgs
HbA1c: 8 down to 5.3
In Remission: Yes
Lynn’s world changed forever when her husband of 50 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She didn’t regret a second of caring for him, but it took its toll. For seven years, there was no time for Lynn to care for herself or think about her health. So when she discovered she had type 2 diabetes, like many people, she didn’t take it seriously - after all, she wasn’t taking medication. But when her husband passed away, she knew she owed it to them both to make time for her finally. Since joining Defeat Diabetes, Lynn has lost 13 kgs, seen her fatty liver and osteoarthritis improve, and has achieved type 2 diabetes remission.
“I started my career working for Ansett - remember them?! - working in Broken Hill as a receptionist before I had two children and joined the NSW Education Department as a student support officer. I’d always been a bit overweight and tried every diet known to man, but the weight never stayed off.
“When I retired and I was caring for my husband, my health declined. Eventually, I had two hip operations and a knee replacement and was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, fatty liver and type 2 diabetes. When they started inserting metal parts into my body, I decided enough was enough! I realised I had to care for myself and find a different way of living - I wanted to be healthier, fitter and prolong my life.
“My cousin shared a YouTube video by Defeat Diabetes founder Dr Peter Brukner. I remember being utterly amazed when I watched it; I had no idea that carbs could make me sick. So I decided to do as my doctor had asked and get serious about my disease. That’s how I became a Defeat Diabetes member - and I haven’t looked back.
“Since starting the program, what I’ve found most shocking is how many sugars and carbs are hiding in food. So whenever I go shopping, I check my labels the way Defeat Diabetes has shown me. It’s been such an eye-opener.
“When I first joined the program, people noticed that I was losing weight; they were forever saying that I looked so well! But what I love about the Defeat Diabetes Progam is that I don’t have to think about anything other than what's on the meal plan that day, and then come home and cook it - it’s as simple as that.
“I used to be a plain cook when dieting, just fish, salad, and chicken. I wasn’t inventive. But Defeat Diabetes has given me a whole new set of options for what to cook. I just love knowing I’m eating beautiful meals that aren’t harming me. My favourite recipes are Creamy Beef and Mushroom Stew, Crustless Quiche, Pork Schnitty and Buttery Cabbage.
“I admit I was blasé about my disease before, but with the help of this program, everything has fallen into place. It’s made it easy for me to keep motivated and do what I need to. Since starting with Defeat Diabetes, I’ve lost 13 kg and reversed my type 2, but it’s not just that - I’m so much happier! I’m no longer depressed. At age 76, I found the courage to join a gym, and I go to pool classes. My best friend tells everyone, “You should see Lynn on the treadmill; she amazes me!”
“I’m just so grateful that I found this program. I’ve been dieting on and off for 50 years - how silly is that?! - and to think that all my health problems for the last five years are due to being overweight and eating badly.
“I’ve lost weight, reversed type 2 diabetes, my fatty liver is improved, and even my osteoarthritis is better, thanks to the Defeat Diabetes way of eating. But most importantly, for the first time in 15 years, I finally put my engagement ring on again - and that means more than anything.”
